In early 2014, five long-time musicians and friends came together to form the Mkizwana Ensemble. Named after musical director, Viwe Mkizwana, the band performs a variety of original compositions jointly arranged by the dynamic members of this collective.
The combination of keyboard, double bass, trumpet, alto and tenor saxophones lends the ensemble a unique sound which fuses jazz and traditional African music. The notable success of this young ensemble stems from a commitment to an energetic, organic style of music creation and performance.
Since their formation, the ensemble has performed frequently both in public and for private events. In 2014 they were invited to perform at the Moratele Park Jazz Festival and later the same year graced the stage of Standard Bank’s Joy of Jazz Festival in Johannesburg. In addition to sharing the stage with world-renowned legends, the Mkizwana Ensemble has received positive publicity in local and national media.
After placing third in the Guateng’s Puisano Competition in 2014, the ensemble has ambitious plans for the future. With a recorded album in the works and various live performances scheduled for 2015, Mkizwana Ensemble continues to strive toward their goal of reviving an appreciation of jazz and a passion for music amongst today’s youth.
